Braces work by gently pressing on your teeth over time and moving them into their desired positions.

Braces are beneficial to both adults and children alike. The best age for children to begin orthodontic treatment varies depending on their individual needs. However, it is essential that a child has lost all of their baby teeth and that they have been replaced by their secondary teeth, prior to the commencement of treatment. Adult patients may require a longer treatment time, as they have denser bone structure than children; however, the results are just as effective. You are never too old for braces!

Modern braces look much less bulky and noticeable. Braces no longer just look like "train tracks" running across your teeth. Today, braces are available in a variety of shapes and colors. We use clear ceramic brackets on the top teeth so all that is visible is the wire running through the brackets. This greatly decreases the visibility of the braces. You can even customise your colour each time you visit. Click here to customise your braces online.

Your braces will be adjusted periodically so that your teeth move correctly and efficiently. The time required for orthodontic treatment varies from person to person; however, an average treatment time is approximately 18 months. After your braces have been removed you will need to wear a retainer. A retainer is a custom-made, removable appliance that helps keep teeth in their new, straightened position after braces have been removed. Retainers can also be used to treat more minor orthodontic problems.

Most braces are made up of four main parts: bands, brackets, wires, and ties:

  • Bands – Are the flat metal rings that are placed on the molars in the back of your mouth. Usually there are four bands: two on the top teeth and two on the bottom teeth. Bands hold the wires in place that are threaded around your teeth.
  • Brackets – Are the pieces of specially shaped metal or ceramic which are attached to each tooth. Brackets are the most visible part of braces. They come in many different colors, shapes and sizes.

  • Wires – Are the thin strips of metal that thread through the brackets. Over time as the wire is tightened, teeth move into the correct position.

  • Ties - Are the small rubber rings that hold the wire in place on the bracket. Click here to customise your braces online.
