Expanders & appliances for teens

In the earlier teen years there's often still growth to work with — and appliances such as palatal expanders can use that window to widen the upper jaw, correct the bite and create room for teeth before braces.

Some bite and width issues are easiest to correct while a teen is still growing. A palatal expander gently widens the upper jaw, creating space for crowded teeth and helping the top and bottom teeth meet correctly.

Acting at the right time can make the next stage simpler — and for many teens, expanders or other appliances are a first step before braces or Invisalign®.

What to expect with an expander

The expander is adjusted a little at a time with a small key — something we'll show your teen exactly how to do at home. They may feel mild pressure for the first few days, notice a slight change to their speech, or have a little more saliva than usual; most teens adapt within about a week.

A small gap can appear between the front teeth during treatment — that's a normal, healthy sign the expander is working, and it usually closes on its own. Soft foods help in the early days.
